The Power of God’s Word

Dearly beloved of God, the power of God to perform His Word is set forth at the very commencement of revelation. God spoke and so it became. God’s Word always accomplishes His purposes. Heaven and earth move at His Word. Nothing is too hard for Him because He is all-powerful. God is infinitely capable of performing His Word. Nothing can keep Him from His purposes.

The gospel of John draws our attention to this truth, also.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” John 1:1-4

When He speaks, that settles it. All from here to eternity hinges on God’s ability to perform His Word. You cannot separate God from His Word any more than I can separate you from your word.

Verse three, says, “All things were made by him . . .” The word “made” in the Greek is ginomai, which means, “to come into existence; implying origin”. God brought all things into existence. Why not take Him at His Word? “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

“Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:18-20 NIV

God is a supernatural power. Whether we are considering creation, salvation, answered prayer, His deliverance from incurable diseases, miracles, resurrection, the gathering together, eternal life, the revealing of His Word, or the laws of nature, God is the supernatural power behind all of them. The ungodly willfully fail to acknowledge this truth.

“For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God; by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” II Peter 3:5-7 ASV

This all happened according to the Word of God and by His power to perform it. The same is true of that which will take place in the future.

“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” II Peter 3:12 and 13

God is Spirit and He gave us the spiritual light of His Word. The Word of God is alive, and it is powerful because He is the power behind it. God’s Word discriminates between matters that no other source can. He can do what no other spirit being, or human being can do with their word. We should never forget this crucial lesson.

In spite of this, our adversary the devil does his best to impugn God’s integrity and undermine His Word.

During his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ exposed how the adversary works. He said that the devil was “the father of lies” and that there was “no truth in him” in John 8:44. He is identified as “the tempter.” He tempts us to not believe what God says, but to listen to him.

In John 10:10, Jesus Christ said that the devil was “a thief” and that he came, “. . . to steal and to kill and to destroy.” His words cannot be trusted; he is the deceiver.

He twists God’s Word by adding to what God said, by leaving out pertinent information, changing words, forging texts, calling similar records identical and vice versa, taking what is literal and calling it figurative, and by taking what is figurative and calling it literal, by pulling things out of context, by misrepresenting to whom a passage is addressed, or misrepresenting the times spoken of, and by many other fraudulent practices in order to deceive people, and blind their eyes until there is no truth left in what is called the Word of God. He works to deceive and lead people away from the One True God.

The adversary’s primary target is God’s Word because if he can get rid of His Word there is no other way to know the One True God or His will; there is nothing left.

“Faith [pistis: believing] comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” Romans 10:17

Without God’s Word man does not know what to believe.
“For we walk by faith [pistis: believing], not by sight.” II Corinthians 5:7

God wants us to know the things that are freely given to us by Him; the things He freely gives us with His Son, so we can walk in these realities. The devil wants to keep us ignorant.

If we are ignorant we can’t know God, we can’t hear His Word so that we know what to believe, and consequently we will not be able to conduct our lives by believing what God says; other than that it’s no big deal.

Dearly beloved, the truth will make you free; the adversary’s lies will deceive and lead you into bondage. God’s Word is alive and powerful. Study to show yourself approved unto God if you want to walk with the power of God in your life.
