Greatness in God’s Sight

Dearly beloved of God, God doesn’t see as men see; He looks on the heart. He looks for different qualities in people than the world looks for in great men. Let’s look at a few of the qualities He considers to be at the top of His list.

“And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, ’Abraham believed God and it was imputed unto him for righteousness:’ and he was called the friend of God.” James 2:23

To be thought of by God as His friend is quite remarkable. Abraham believed what God said, that’s why God called him His friend. Moses was also thought of as a friend by God.
“And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend.” Exodus 33:11 a

“(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” Numbers 12:3

God said, “My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all Mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently [plainly], and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?” Numbers 12:7 and 8

Moses was very meek and faithful to Him; He consistently believed God said. God spoke to him mouth to mouth, even plainly.

His epitaph read, “And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face.” Deuteronomy 34:10

God said of David, “And when He had removed him [Saul], He raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also He gave testimony, and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, which shall fulfil all My will.’” Acts 13:22

God thought of David as a man after His own heart; a man that would fulfill all of His will.

As wonderful as these men were, they were flawed human beings, but God forgave them their sins. The characteristics that distinguished them in God’s sight was that they were meek to Him, they believed Him, and were faithful to do His will.

Dearly beloved, may we live as they did, as those who are after God’s own heart, as those who believe God, and that desire to fulfill the good pleasure of His will in our lives.

To be thought of by God as His friend is fantastic, but He thinks of us in even greater terms; He sees us as His dearly beloved holy ones, as His beloved children, as members of His household, as those who stand before Him in Christ as members of his body, as joint heirs with Christ. We are truly highly favored in His sight. It doesn’t get any better than this.

In our walks with the Heavenly Father may we learn from these men, and exemplify the traits in their lives that distinguished them in God’s sight. As His dearly beloved and highly favored kids may we walk worthy of His calling.
